Aneurysms and Endovascular Treatment

Aneurysmal Subarachnoid hemorrhage

This is a type of bleeding in the brain (hemorrhagic stroke) where a small balloon (Aneurysm) developed on a brain vessel ruptures. This is usually a life-threatening situation where it almost takes 2 to 3 weeks for the patient to recover from this disease.

What is Aneurysm-

It is a small to big size balloon -like outpouching develop over a brain vessel usually at its branching point.

What is the seriousness of this disease?

It is mostly life-threatening and 80 to 90% of the patient lose their life or become bed ridden or dependent on others.

What are the treatment options?

These aneurysms can be either managed by angiography procedure (Endovascular) or open surgery (Microvascular) method.

What is Endovascular treatment?

In this method a small catheter is navigated inside the aneurysm and a metallic material (Coil or Web) is delivered to block the flow of blood into aneurysm. (Fig 2 a)

What is Microvascular treatment?

In this method skull in cut open and aneurysm is accessed from outside. A metallic clip is applied to neck of the aneurysm to prevent flow inside it. (Fig 2b)

Acom aneurysm

It arises from a vessel known as anterior communicating artery. It is commonest aneurysm to occur.
